In the Wake of Ruins tells an imagined story of a makeshift Kindergarten formed in a public park in a not- too-far-dystopian future, created out of necessity and through collectivist efforts. Visually, the film overlaps footage of a worm in soil, a child drawing with watercolors to the point of a muddied saturation, and monotype prints with the cut paper shapes used to make them.
The shapes form the boundaries used to create overlaps in footage and become a form of visual compost, metabolizing imagery to create new hybrid combinations.
This ethos of composted material is important to Allred’s practice, where the physical material itself is a precious resource, but the process of making is iterative and ongoing. Erasure becomes an act of generosity, making space for new voices and new ideas.
